7 best eco-friendly candles
There’s something so magical about candles. Within seconds of lighting the wick, a sweet aroma tickles our nose and begins to envelop us in a cloud of tranquility. It’s no wonder these enchanting little jars are an essential part of our self-care rituals – and considering the past year we’ve all had; self-care has never been more important.

That’s why we’re here to tell you not all candles are made equally. What many people don’t know is most conventional candles are produced with lead wicks and paraffin wax (a petroleum byproduct). When burned they release highly toxic chemicals and heavy metals into our air, making them harmful to us and the environment.

The good news is there’s a growing number of brands offering safe and sustainable wax alternatives, so we’ve compiled a list of our favorite eco-friendly and non-toxic candles you can burn guilt free!

1. Stylish candles from DuggCandles

Eco friendly, beautiful and stylish candles made by hand in Norway. This small business offers different types of candles and use essential oil blends to ensure a delicate scent, such as lavender, pine and cinnamon. I absolutely adore their Soft Meadow range. The candles come in a luxurious and environmentally friendly box, which makes them an excellent gift idea.

2. Beeswax candles from Licht Blick

Beeswax is toxic free and when beeswax candles are burned, they actually improve the air quality. This package of beeswax candles is available at Beeorganic.no and includes a candle holder made from 100% recycled glass. The candles also come in a recyclable cardboard box, so no plastic. If you want to avoid beeswax, then Licht Blick also offers vegan friendly options made using plant wax (also available at beeorganic.no).

3. Unique candles from Felicias

This webshop opened in March this year, and the owner is taking her hobby to the next level by offering her unique and stylish décor candles to us. All the beautifully shaped candles are handmade using soy wax. The packaging is also environmentally friendly, which means plastic free. You get free shipping anywhere in Norway if you order for more than 250 kr.

4. Beeswax candles from Honninggutta

Help save the bees by purchasing beeswax candles from Honninggutta. The company was started by three young men in Kristiansand and their purpose is to help increase the number of bees by increasing the number of beekeepers. They also work to increase interest for honey and its byproducts (such as the candles).

5. Coconut and rapeseed wax candles from Søstrene Grene

Enjoy the scented coconut and rapeseed wax candles made by Danish Søstrene Grene. They offer a variety of scents, so pick your favorite and let these candles take you to your happy place! The candles are sold in glass containers that can be recycled or repurposed.

6. Soy wax candles and seeds from Pass it On

These candles are the gift that keeps on growing. Literally. The candle itself is made from 100% soy wax with lead-free cotton wicks, and contains no additives, phthalates, or parabens. The candles come with both soil and seeds, and once the wax is gone, just add the soil, plant the seeds, and watch your buds grow! What starts out as a luxurious scented candle transforms into a beautiful pot plant. Pass it On also promises to plant ten trees in Indonesia, through the Trillion Tree Campaign for every candle purchased. The candles are available at sustainablefashion.no.

7. Candles certified by the Nordic Swan

When looking for more environmentally friendly options in the shops, you can also look for candles certified by the Nordic Swan. The certifications means that at least 90% of the candle is made using renewable resources. Any colouring used needs to be environmentally friendly, and the candles cannot include any palm oil.  Certified candles will have no added perfume, as perfume can be allergenic. Any container or packaging needs to be reusable or degradable.
