9 best eco-friendly candles
There’s something so magical about candles. Within seconds of lighting the wick, a sweet aroma tickles our nose and begins to envelop us in a cloud of tranquility. It’s no wonder these enchanting little jars are an essential part of our self-care rituals – and considering the past year we’ve all had; self-care has never been more important.

That’s why we’re here to tell you not all candles are made equally. What many people don’t know is most conventional candles are produced with lead wicks and paraffin wax (a petroleum byproduct). When burned they release highly toxic chemicals and heavy metals into our air, making them harmful to us and the environment.

The good news is there’s a growing number of brands offering safe and sustainable wax alternatives, so we’ve compiled a list of our favorite eco-friendly and non-toxic candles you can burn guilt free!

1. Hyggelight

These candles are the gift that keeps on growing. Literally. What starts out as a luxurious scented candle transforms into a beautiful pot of wildflowers. Each candle is hand poured in a reusable planter with seeds embedded in the label. Once the wax is gone, just add some soil, plant the label and watch your buds bloom! The candle itself is made from 100% soy wax with lead-free cotton wicks, and contains no additives, phthalates, or parabens.

2. Sanari

Calling all our vino lovers. This one is for you! Sanari creates plant-based candles from a vegan, coconut wax blend. All of which are hand poured into 100% recycled glasses that can be re-recycled or reused as wine tumblers. The candles are scented using whole essential oils that “promote healthy living and improved well-being”.

3. Birth Month Flower Candles

These candles are brought to you by mother-daughter duo Elizabeth and Amberlee Isabella. Hand crafted in New York from cruelty-free soy wax and essential oil blends, each candle’s scent is inspired by a specific month and flower. The glasses are finished with a delicate floral silhouette, and can be repurposed as functional décor to tidy your vanity area or store writing utensils.

4. Prosperity Candle

Prosperity Candle doesn’t only create beautiful coconut and soy wax candles – they also support refugees and artisans from around the world, helping them earn a living wage as candlemakers. Behind each candle is the story of a woman and her journey to building a brighter future for herself. Every purchase comes with a card from the artisan who made the candle. You can visit the artisans page to read her story and send her a note. All the candles use 100% pure cotton and sustainably harvested wood wicks and are free of dyes and artificial enhancers.

5. Keap

The Keap mission is to help restore the balance and connection between humanity and nature through their zero-waste, coconut wax candles. You can sign up for a subscription to receive exclusive scents and return your candleholders which will be reused. All items are made locally in Kingston, NY, and shipped in compostable packaging made from mushrooms.

6. Shanti Creations

Based out of Queens, NY, this company creates coconut wax candles that contain no petrochemicals, harmful metals, dyes, pesticides, or preservatives. They offer lid attachments on their website so you can easily transform your candle jar into a tea infuser or salt and pepper shaker. There are over 40 different scents to choose from and they’ve done several collaborations with individuals and organizations that share their zero-waste values (a personal fav is their Damn Plastic collab.)

7. Satya + Sage

This line of candles was created with the intention to “remind you to slow down, uplift yourself, and create your own sacred space”. Smudged with sage prior to pouring and with Palo Santo after to ensure they catch all the good vibes just for you! These candles are eco-friendly from start to finish – using vegetable and coconut wax, cotton wicks, and 100% pure essential oils. Satya + Sage also promises to plant a tree for every purchase.

8. Get a Whiff Co.

Who doesn’t love curling up to the sounds of a crackling, cozy fire? Thankfully the good humans at Get a Whiff Co. agree because they’ve found a way to bottle this feeling and deliver it in the form of a beautifully crafted candle. Made from coconut wax and wood wicks that crackle as they burn. They offer a wide variety of scents, so pick your favorite and let these candles take you to your happy place!

9. Bijou

The inspiration for these non-toxic candles comes from the founders’ obsession with “all things pop culture, all things witchy, and all things women empowerment”. They are made using 100% soy wax and cotton wicks and are vegan and cruelty-free.  The scents are blended to remind you of your favorite icons and heroines of pop culture history (check out their 70s icons collection featuring Dolly, Stevie, and Cher). Not to mention the candles are decorated with stunning gold detail, and burn for up to 140 hours.
