Have yourself a vegan Valentine!
This time last year, we never would have thought that the world would have unravelled as it has – and definitely wouldn’t have thought that we’d still be here in February 2021. But thankfully for us, not even a pandemic can stop the romance of Valentine’s Day! Planning this day to be just right might feel like a lot of pressure sometimes, so we’re here to help.

We’ve compiled a list of vegan-friendly restaurants that you can choose from to spend the day with your loved one, friends or family. Some are outdoors – like the Spier Picnic in Stellenbosch – and most have options for takeaways if you’d prefer to spend the day at home.

1. Order falafel wraps from Kindred Kitchen – Port Elizabeth

Kindred Kitchen boasts itself as PE’s first plant-based restaurant. With the exception of honey in some of their drinks and the option to add cow’s milk to your coffee, their menu is fully vegan. On top of their restaurant menu options, they also have a delicious deli selection that’s full of yummy vegan options like carrot cake and vegan rusks. For reservations call 074 897 9339.

2. Have a picnic at Spier – Stellenbosch

Few things are quite as romantic as sharing a beautiful picnic with your S.O on Valentine’s Day! Spier currently has three picnic packages available – summer picnics, plant-based picnics and a kid’s picnic. The plant-based picnics include fresh vegetable crudité from the farm, baguettes, spiced chickpeas and so much more! You can book your spot on their website and luckily there are still a few available for Valentine’s Day weekend (at the time of writing). Choose your picnic option and share it with your plus one or spend the day with your family. Their plant-based picnic will run you about R295.00 per person while their kids’ picnic costs R160.00. If you’re not comfortable going out to eat at the farm, order a picnic to be delivered to you at home and bring the romance to your own backyard. For reservations call 021 809 1159.

3. Have a romantic evening at Little Addis – Johannesburg

The reviews are in and Little Addis Café in Milpark, Johannesburg gets five stars! The restaurant staff takes the necessary precautions of wearing masks and checking patrons’ temperature at the door.

But if staying at home is your preferred vibe, order a veggie platter with injera and light up some candles for a romantic evening in.

Their average meal price is around R70 which makes this a great, affordable option too. For reservations call 082 683 8675.

4. Try Foxcraft’s vegan menu – Cape Town

This is the sister restaurant to La Colombe (aka TripAdvisor’s #1 Fine Dining Restaurant in Africa) so if you’re looking to have an upmarket dining experience, then Foxcraft is your guy. “At Foxcroft, we aim to cook with the same intensity and thoughtfulness as fine dining but in a more casual and approachable format,” says Chef Proprietor Glen Foxcroft Williams. Their plant-based menu is nirvana! It includes marinated golden beets, roasted mushrooms, glazed sweet potatoes, and more. My mouth is watering as I’m typing this! For reservations call 021 202 3304.

5. Gaze into each other’s eyes over at El Burro Taqueria – Cape Town

If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, then El Burro Taqueria is a great treat! This vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurant serves authentic Mexican food that you will want to keep going back for. Everyone keeps going on about their fish tacos (which are great) but not enough people talk about their vegan wild mushroom quesadillas. They’re also available to order for takeout. Don’t forget to grab one of their hot sauce bottles or a bag of corn tortillas to also enjoy at home. For reservations call 021 422 3554.

6. “Let’s Avocuddle” at Oh my Soul Café – Durban

This fully vegan restaurant has such a wide selection of foods to try that you might have a hard time deciding. Treat your date to their “Thaitastic crunch salad” with extra avo while you enjoy their buddha bowl with sweet potato and butternut. Their menu is full of cute food puns to giggle over during your shared meal. Enjoy at home or at the restaurant. For reservations call 063 172 2531.

7. Slurp up some delicious noodles from Dahlia on Regent – Cape Town

This Asian street food-inspired restaurant is sure to impress your date! They have limited seating, so you’ll definitely have to book your spot before heading out. To book a table, their website offers a very easy to follow booking form. Once you have your table reserved, put on your best outfit, and head out for dinner. Try their Crispy Ginger Tofu Biang Biang Noodles or their Spicy Miso Aubergine Dan Dan Noodles.  For reservations call 087 470 0296.
