How can Aurora work for your organization?
Jan-Gunnar Mathisen, the CEO of MIRIS, always says: “Think big, start small”. So MIRIS decided to start reducing their carbon footprint at home. The first step  was to quantify the carbon footprint of their team through the Aurora platform and use that as a benchmark to start making positive changes.

MIRIS is a sustainable incubator that uses technology to turn buildings into energy producers instead of users. Sustainability is a key principle to the way that MIRIS does business. The company has quickly realized that the behavior of the individuals working and living in these buildings is a key contributor to the carbon footprint.

A benchmark

When MIRIS looks to lower the carbon footprint of a building, the first thing they do is measure the current CO2 emissions and energy usage. In the same way, the company was able to understand the current team footprint so that they could help find new ways to encourage sustainability. Giving the Aurora tool to employees was not about judgement but rather access to a resource that can help the people of MIRIS to live the company’s principles.

Positive change

Sustainability can often seem overwhelming and complex, especially when considering the technology available for reducing carbon emissions. At Aurora we believe helping the planet starts with people. MIRIS could build the most sustainable building in the world, but if nobody cares about the planet, it won’t be used. Starting with small changes that the company could make to help people become more sustainable was an obvious strategic initiative.

Once people knew what their carbon footprint was, MIRIS could start to implement initiatives and see their impact. For instance, MIRIS, like many other companies, became a remote-first company during 2020. They implemented collaboration software tools and internal operational processes that allowed people to work from home and still be productive and connected. As employees took the quiz at the beginning of 2020, MIRIS was able to easily measure the impact of these new policies. Without Aurora, they’d have to individually measure every employee’s change in travel habits. Instead, they just asked employees to retake the quiz and measured the impact based on the initial benchmark.

Sustainability reporting

Measuring the team’s carbon footprint has also allowed MIRIS to measure return on environment along with financial metrics. This is incredibly important for a company that offers ESG (environmental, social and governance) investment in green bonds. MIRIS has a strict Green Finance Framework that ensures all funds spent are measured based on environmental impact. The ability to report on the impact of their team also shows the level of transparency and accountability that the organization embodies.

While many companies are able to quantify and report on the emissions from their manufacturing processes and supply chains, kilograms of CO2 isn’t meaningful to the average person. Through Aurora, MIRIS employees and investors can see the team’s carbon footprint in tangible ways that make sense. These include loads of washing, cups of coffee and steaks. MIRIS even chose to publish these carbon comparisons on their website to show the tangible understanding they have of their team’s impact. In doing this MIRIS joined companies like Apple who recently stated that the impact of stopping the production of USB cables is the same as taking 50 000 cars off the road.
