Love your butt with more sustainable undies
Not all superheroes wear capes. Some wear sustainable, eco-friendly undies too! And while we can all appreciate the small changes we’re all doing in our everyday lives to live more sustainably, we don’t want you stressing out about shopping for underwear that is perfectly zero-waste.

While planning a date night outfit, you might have tried to either find something to wear that you already have or shopped at your local vintage store. But when it comes to shopping for sexy lingerie, finding pieces that are beautiful, comfortable, and eco-friendly might not have been as straight-forward. We want you to know that there is a plethora of options out there for you that will suit your lifestyle. Who ever said sustainability couldn’t be sexy?

So, with your zero-waste journey in mind, we’ve compiled a list of businesses for you to support this year and beyond.

Bonus: most of the businesses mentioned are also women-owned and we love to see it!

1. Nette Rose

First off, we have the beautiful Nette Rose. This local company has branded itself: “Ethical lifestyle intimates for our babes” and it shows. Not only is Nette Rose filled with beautiful pieces to choose from, they also make a conscious effort to minimise waste. According to their website, “Always feel free to request minimal to no packaging if you would prefer the bare minimum with your order. We respect your journey babe!”. And the packaging they use is made with local materials that are designed to be used over and over again. “With our boxes being made to a meticulous standard we hope you will keep them for months or maybe years, storing your precious things, whether it's lingerie, jewellery, paintbrushes, or special photographs,” says Nette Rose.

2. Boody South Africa

This eco-certified company sells undies that are made with 100% organically grown bamboo. Their range includes undies, loungewear, and even activewear. This is a great brand to support because they prioritize the environment when creating their products, but they also prioritise their customers’ comfort. "We’ll keep making everyday essentials with materials that are better for the environment than the range that came before. And comfier, of course,” says Boody South Africa. Their garments are made using no pesticides, no fertilizer and with low water consumption so you can enjoy wearing any of their pieces knowing that they were made with meticulous care. Their sizes range from XS-XL in their men and women collections.

3. Takkleberry

This local brand is made up of a small team of women working together to give you quality, handmade undies. The company is based in Cape Town, but they are able to ship worldwide. Their handmade packaging is reusable and sent with a personalised card – all sent to you within the week. So, if you’re planning on gifting something from their range, be sure to order in time! Because it is a limited edition and their garments are all handmade, you’ll want to act fast on this one.

4. Gugu Intimates

Gugu intimates is a brand that was able to find the gap in the market that needed nude undies that were suited for women with brown skin. According to their site, “We exist to fulfill one MISSION – to adorn brown-skinned girls in beautiful, premium quality underwear that complements your skin tone no matter what shade you are.” Their website allows you to shop by shade – Amara, Elewa, Buhle, Runako, and Zuri – as well as by fit so you’re bound to find something in there for you. As a result of Covid, the business is currently only available online, save for a limited number of retailers who stock this brand. For online purchases, you can either shop their range directly from their site or from Superbalist.

5. Luna Intimates

This is a brand that prides itself on its ethical, slow fashion approach. Their pieces are all handmade and made in small batches in their studio in Cape Town. Company founder Mianca Teifel says that she started the business with the goal of giving women something that made them feel both beautiful and comfortable. With the option of purchasing a custom, embroidered satin bag to go with your purchase, this is a great gift idea – maybe even for yourself!
