Smart, green and eco-conscious gift ideas for kids
As any new parent does, I had lofty aspirations of never letting my child watch too much television and not buying endless toys, especially plastic ones. Fast-forward three years, and here we are 30 minutes deep into an episode of Paw Patrol and there are a fair number of toys strewn around my house – most of them plastic. These toys will never decompose and essentially last much longer than my son will ever have a need for.

But let’s be honest, finding quality, affordable eco-conscious kids toys is not as easy as it could or should be. So in an effort to be more conscious of what I buy my tiny human this festive season, I’ve done some searching and come up with a list of my favourite planet-friendly gifts.

For Babies and Toddlers

The Smart Toy Club

Started by two clever mom friends, The Smart Toy Club is a monthly toy subscription rental service for kids aged six months to five years. For a monthly fee you get a bag of age-appropriate, quality toys delivered to your door. We love that the toys provided are a clever selection of wooden, educational or tech toys, plus some books, puzzles and games. It’s eco-friendly, convenient and saves you money – genius really. They will also happily buy previously loved toys from you to repurpose and reuse. And in case you were wondering, all toys come to you thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

Adam and Nonni

A beautiful selection of locally made educational wooden toys using non-toxic wooden paint. The goal is to help babies and toddler practice and develop their fine motor and cognitive skills in a fun and sustainable way. Plus, you’re supporting and loving a local small business.

Little Beehive

These sweet cardboard Wendy houses come flat packed and are quick and easy to assemble. It offers hours of fun by encouraging creative and imaginative play. Allow your little one to decorate and paint (with natural paints and crayons – just scroll down) to their heart’s content; and remember to recycle it when you no longer have a need for it.

Green Toys

Is there anything cooler than toys made from post-consumer plastic (aka hundreds of recycled milk bottles)? This brand works hard to keep huge amounts of waste from landfills and creates great eco-conscious toys that range from submarines and dump trucks to doctor’s kits and more.

For Arts and Crafts

Pro Nature The Junior Tin Paints

Looking for some planet-loving paints to decorate that Little Beehive Wendy house? The Junior Tin paint set is made from strictly mineral and naturally occurring pigments that are safe, sustainable and easy to clean. A perfect combo, really.

Rainbow Rocks Soy Crayons

Made from a 100% soy and vegetable base, these crayons are biodegradable, eco-friendly and safe to use for little fingers. They come in a round flower-like shape that makes them easy to grip and are scented with calming lavender oil. They are also available in Soy Pastels, ideal for bigger kids, seven years +.

Seed Pencils

Totally unique, each pencil is manufactured from sustainably harvested wood and contains seeds that, once too short to write with, you can plant in some soil and watch them sprout and grow into herbs, flowers or vegetables.

Gift an Experience

A great option for older kids and teenagers is to gift them with something not material but rather an experience. Ideas like makeup lessons, SUP or surf lessons, or Segway tours and Scootours are all fun and a little different.

Giving Back

Giving back during the holidays is a great way to teach and foster empathy and generosity towards others in our children, and also a great way to start a special new family tradition. For younger kids, you can encourage them to each pick a toy (or two) and donate it to kids in need. Older children can be encouraged to get involved in charities like Santa’s Shoe Box. Or if you’re able to, your whole family can pick a charity that means something to all of you and make a donation.
