Recently we’ve seen a positive shift towards being more accepting of our flaws and loving the skin we are in.

When skincare is your self-care
So much of our self-worth can be tied up in what we see in the mirror. More recently we’ve seen a very positive shift towards being more accepting of our flaws and loving the skin we are in. And while it’s great seeing influencers going bare-skinned, embracing their newfound love of every bump, mark and scar, how exactly do YOU do that.

But how?

There are a few different ways to practice self-care – from meditating and hiking to journaling. Basically anything that helps you connect with yourself and helps you feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin. Daily rituals are also a great way to practice self-care, starting with your skincare routine. It’s the perfect way to get in a bit of me-time that will make you look at yourself and your skin a bit differently.

The K-Beauty Way

As much as 10-steps in a skincare routine could be daunting to some, South Korean women view skincare as self-love. Every bit of massaging, tapping and gentle application of various lotions and potions plays a bigger part in making time for your skin, and spending time on this ritual is part of their daily quota of self-care.

Before you panic, I’m not suggesting investing in a mountain of new products or spending hours you don’t have on your skin, but here are some lessons from our fellow skincare lovers we should be giving a go:

Start masking

Every Sunday night I apply a face mask. It has become one of my favourite rituals and something I look forward to. It’s almost like I’m prepping my skin (and myself) for the week ahead and can be anything from a soothing, restorative mask to a detoxing clay mask to help exfoliate or clear breakouts. I also love to mask when I’m stressed (don’t knock it ‘till you’ve tried it) and it comes in really handy if you’re still WFH.  

Good to try:

We know Chinese women swear by using jade massage tools as part of their routines to keep themselves looking flawless. A quick Google search will also show you that the ancient Egyptians and Mayans believed in the cooling properties of jade to help assist massage in aiding muscle relief. Try incorporating a jade roller and a gua sha every second night into your bedtime routine as part of a facial massage. The benefits include improved circulation and lymphatic drainage so you end up looking more glowing, rested and less puffy.

Look for ingredients and brands that you identify with – which can be anything from cruelty-free to completely plant-based, earth-friendly or sustainable, the key is to enjoy using it. If you love it, you’ll spend more time doing it and see better results.
